At Stampotique designers challenge Kay asks us to use a quote from Edgar Allan Poe in our work. I chose a line from one of his poems, a poem that is romantic and melancholic, a poem that concurs Poe’s favourite theme the death of a woman. “we loved with a love that was more than love” from Annabel Lee. It’s an art journal page, and most of you following me knows that my art journal pages are coming from a deep feeling inside me. This was the same. Love is a feeling that I long for, love is a feeling that I still would like to discover. When I read Poe’s poem about Annabel Lee I could feel how much pain he feels at the same time that he claims he has the biggest happiness on earth. What a philosophical contradiction in itself: like pain and happiness or hate and love would walk hand in hand. Yet it is true, happiness and love are fragile, it is more like walking on thin ice one step to fast and it breaks, or dancing a passionate tango, one move to the wrong side and you are out of rhythm. So all that turmoil of feelings made me create a deep magenta-vermilion-rose background.
Used tissue paper and old book page to stamp Daniel’s hanging hearts (#6119) and France’ s my heart (#10008) with archival ink:
I applied them onto my background with soft gel and around ‘my heart’ I still stamped with France’s design cube (#10012) some textures.
My text is Roc’s stacked love (#2427) where I handwrite the rest of the quote. I added some lace, scraps, embellishment, canvas fringe and simple net around my quote.
The little hearts around are stamped with Jo’s heart cubed (#3003) and finally a few fine details:
Hope you feel the love, how much happiness and sorrow it can bring. Thanks for joining me.
I am sharing my spread with Quoth the raven quest #39, Anything Poes.
Ruth, so poignant! ! I love the verse you chose. Poe is an amazing writer, the minds visuals he creates with his words are astounding. And this verse captures the emotions and depth of love. It is a precarious path. .. beautifully captured here by you
Thanks Sylvia 🙂
Beautiful page with gorgeous textures, colours and loving the hearts, all of them – I can feel the ache for love in your page and your post, Ruth.
Thanks Susan 🙂
Gorgeous page, Ruth. I prefer quiet, contented love to painful, all-consuming passion. The tissue paper image came out really well! I love those stamps!

I am so very impressed with how you interpreted this week’s Stampotique challenge, Ruth! You have taken one of the “softer” works of Poe and created a romantic piece of art! Very creative way to include the quote, by the way! Thanks so much for participating in the Stampotique Designers’ Challenge this week!
